Frequently Asked Questions
We know that choosing care for a loved one raises many important questions. Find clear, honest answers below — and reach out to us anytime if you need more.
General Care Questions
Non-medical elderly care refers to support services that help seniors with activities of daily living without providing medical treatment. This includes personal care, companionship, homemaking, and assistance with tasks like bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and transportation — all delivered by trained caregivers who are not medical professionals. It is distinct from home health care, which involves licensed nurses or therapists.
A Personal Care Assistant (PCA) helps seniors with activities of daily living, which may include bathing, grooming, hair care, dressing and undressing, oral hygiene, toileting and incontinence care, mobility and transfer assistance (getting in and out of chairs, beds, or vehicles), and medication reminders. PCAs do not administer medications or provide medical treatments — they assist with the personal, physical tasks of everyday living.
Companion care focuses on social and emotional engagement — providing meaningful conversation, participating in activities and hobbies, reading together, accompanying the senior on outings, and offering emotional support and friendship. Homemaker services focus on household tasks: light housekeeping, vacuuming, laundry, dishwashing, meal preparation, and grocery shopping. Many of our clients receive a blend of both services, and we can customize a plan to combine them according to your loved one's needs.
Absolutely. Every care plan at New Haven Elderly Services is personalized to the individual senior's needs, preferences, daily routine, and the goals of their family. We begin every relationship with a comprehensive conversation to understand who the person is and what kind of support would genuinely help them. From there, we build a plan that fits — and we adjust it over time as needs change.
There are several signs that a senior may benefit from in-home care support: difficulty managing daily tasks like bathing or dressing independently, concerns about their safety when home alone, noticeable weight loss or signs of poor nutrition, increased social isolation or loneliness, memory lapses or confusion, or difficulty keeping the home clean and organized. If you are concerned, contact us — our team can help you assess whether in-home care is the right next step.
Questions About Specific Services
Yes. We offer Overnight PCA services for seniors who need nighttime supervision and support. This may include assistance with nighttime toileting, repositioning, responding to confusion or wandering, and early-morning personal care. Overnight care gives family caregivers the rest they need while ensuring the senior is never alone or unsupported through the night.
Live-In Care means a caregiver lives full-time in the senior's home, providing continuous presence and support throughout the day — including personal care, companionship, meal preparation, and household assistance. The caregiver sleeps in the home. Overnight PCA is typically a dedicated shift (for example, 10 PM–6 AM) during which a caregiver is specifically present and awake or on-call to assist the senior through the night. Live-in care offers more comprehensive, ongoing support, while overnight PCA addresses specifically nighttime needs.
Adult Family Living (AFL) is a Connecticut Department of Social Services program that places eligible seniors in the private home of a trained and approved host caregiver family. It offers a warm, residential care alternative to assisted living facilities or nursing homes. AFL is generally suitable for seniors who need daily assistance with personal care but do not require 24-hour skilled nursing. Eligibility is determined through a formal DSS assessment. Contact us to learn more about the AFL program and whether your loved one may qualify.
Yes. Many of our clients benefit from a combination of services. For example, a caregiver may assist with personal care in the morning and then transition to companionship activities during the afternoon. We design care plans that bundle the services your loved one needs into a seamless daily schedule, so they receive comprehensive, consistent support without needing multiple caregivers or agencies.

Prior caregiving experience is appreciated but not always required for every position. We provide training and orientation for qualified applicants who are new to the caregiving field. The qualities we value most are genuine compassion, reliability, a patient nature, and a deep respect for the dignity of the people we serve. If you have those qualities, we encourage you to apply.
All caregivers at New Haven Elderly Services undergo a thorough background screening process, which includes a criminal background check and reference verification. This is a standard and essential part of our hiring process — it is how we maintain the trust that families place in us when they invite one of our caregivers into their home.
